DARE TO DREAM THE IMPOSSIBLE
This talk is not about me per se but rather, a first-hand revelation of our incredible capacity to overcome whatever circumstances and challenges life can throw at us.
We are so easily conditioned to believe that we have to accept ourselves for what we are and deal with our “lot” in the best way that we can. As a child I was the most miserable, awkward and uncomfortable misfit imaginable: I had a very poor self-image and as a consequence manifested a very severe inferiority complex.
It is a law of nature that whatever we give out, we attract. My negativity attracted ever more negativity and ultimately manifested itself in the form of chronic depression.
In my 2nd year at Teacher’s College I had become so dysfunctional that I would spend up to a week in bed, neither bathing nor eating…simply wishing to die and as a consequence dropped out of college.
I somehow got employed but soon afterwards got dismissed for being in bed more than at work. I convinced myself that having been dismissed rendered myself being unemployable and in order to “solve” the financial mess I was in, robbed a bank by creating the impression that I was armed by tucking my finger inside my jacket.
The first robbery was my first step down the “slippery slope” that culminated in my ultimately serving a 27-year period in prison and which included an escape from Zonderwater Prison with former police captain Andre Stander, with whom I embarked on a series of bank robberies, and serving a sentence in the U.K for an offence committed there whilst a fugitive from the South African authorities.
Once we compromise our values, ignore that “little voice” and overstep that very obvious line between right and wrong, we have taken the very first step onto the “slippery slope” from which there is never ever any turning back. It always ends in disaster and until and unless the underlying issues are acknowledged, confronted, understood and dealt with the cycle will continue….
Whilst in prison in the U.K. I suffered a nervous breakdown. My prison psychologist urged me pursue worthwhile activities as a means of dealing with the stress and this ultimately led me to discovering quantum physics; by applying the amazing powers inherent in visualizations I largely overcame major character flaws which ultimately and incredibly helped me overcome my chronic and debilitating depression.
I was returned to South Africa in 1991 and eventually released from prison on 18 May 2005, a happy, positive and optimistic person, having spent more than 27 years in prison and embarked on a career as a public speaker.
